Pet Food Industry in Greece

The pet food industry in Greece has experienced steady growth over the past decade, reflecting broader trends in pet ownership and changing consumer habits. As more Greeks welcome pets into their homes—particularly in urban centers—there has been a clear shift from feeding pets table scraps to buying commercial, nutritionally balanced food. Today, the market is valued at over €300 million, with a projected annual growth rate of around 4–6%.

Dogs and cats dominate the market, with dog food accounting for the largest share, although cat food is growing faster, especially among younger pet owners and urban households. The market is still heavily import-dependent, with foreign brands making up approximately 70–80% of all sales. However, local production is on the rise, supported by small to mid-sized Greek companies aiming to offer more competitively priced or specialized products.

Consumer preferences have also evolved. There’s been a notable increase in demand for premium pet foods, such as grain-free, organic, and limited-ingredient diets. Pet owners are also showing greater interest in functional and veterinary diets, often advised by veterinarians for issues like allergies, obesity, and aging. Brands that emphasize natural ingredients, sustainability, and ethical sourcing are also gaining ground, particularly among younger, environmentally conscious consumers.

The industry operates under EU feed legislation, ensuring high standards of safety, labeling, and traceability. In Greece, compliance is overseen by the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET). However, the market does face challenges, including price sensitivity, especially in lower-income areas, and the rising cost of raw materials, which affects the profitability of local producers.

Despite these hurdles, the outlook is positive. There’s strong potential for growth in private label offerings, premium niche products, and exports, particularly to nearby markets in the Balkans and Mediterranean region. With rising pet ownership, a growing middle class, and increasing consumer awareness, Greece’s pet food market is poised to become one of the most dynamic sectors in the country’s agrifood industry.
