Microsoft is undertaking a landmark investment in Greece with the development of its first data center region in the country. This initiative is a central part of the company’s broader “GR for GRowth” digital transformation plan and reflects a strategic commitment to Greece’s technological and economic development.
The project involves the construction of three state-of-the-art data centers located in the Attica region—one in Spata and two in Koropi. Construction began in 2023, and the facilities are expected to be fully operational by 2025. The total value of the investment is projected at approximately €976 million, including €746 million in capital expenditures and €230 million in operational costs over an eight-year period.
These data centers will serve as a significant boost to the country’s digital infrastructure. They will support Microsoft’s core cloud services—Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and Power Platform—offering increased capabilities to both public institutions and private enterprises across Greece. Additionally, the development aims to position Greece as a regional digital hub in Southeastern Europe, being the first Microsoft data center region established in the area.
According to Microsoft, the Greek data centers will run entirely on renewable energy and include energy-efficient features such as LED lighting and cutting-edge water management systems. This aligns with Microsoft’s global environmental commitment to become carbon negative by 2030.
